FGM - First successful prosecution in the UK

On Friday 1st February, the UK saw its first conviction for FGM, as a 37 year old Ugandan woman was found guilty of committing FGM against her three year old daughter. She will be sentenced on 8th March, but faces a jail sentence of up to 14 years.

TG has been campaigning for stricter enforcement of the legislation surrounding FGM since 2014 and we are delighted to see that this significant achievement has been made - if disappointed that it has taken so long for it to happen. We now hope that this will pave the way for further successful prosecutions, so that those who submit their children to this barbaric practice will know that they cannot get away with it.
